This button features an illustration of Benny Goodman by Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003), whose distinctive caricatures of actors and musicians appeared regularly in the New York Times and other publications for more than three quarters of a century.
When Goodman's papers came to the Music Library, they also included Hirschfeld's original drawing. It was transferred to the Prints, Drawings, and Photographs department of the Yale Art Gallery (along with two other original Hirschfelds, one from the Harold Rome Papers and the other from the Goddard Lieberson Papers). The Music Library retained the button bearing a reproduction of Hirschfeld's Goodman caricature.
