Piano Exercises, Manuscript copied by Chopin's sister, Ludwika Jędrzejewiczowa Piano Exercises, Manuscript copied by Chopin's sister, Ludwika Jędrzejewiczowa

Chopin was an excellent pianist, and a popular (and well paid) piano teacher. He composed two dozen etudes. Although each of them exemplifies a particular aspect of keyboard technique, they are small masterpieces, not mere finger exercises. The manuscript seen here, however, offers a sample of Chopin’s pedagogy at a more mundane level: it includes scales, arpeggios, thirds, sixths, and octaves, complete with fingerings. It is in the hand of Chopin’s eldest sister, Ludwika Jędrzejewiczowa (1807–1855). Until recently, it belonged to the pianist Cyprien Katsaris.
