Like “Sunt lacrimae rerum,” “Sursum corda” is part of Liszt’s third set of Années de pélerinage, and again we have a copyist’s manuscript bearing Liszt’s corrections and additions. Although both works have Latin titles, “Sursum corda,” comes not from classical literature, but rather from the Roman Catholic Mass. It is usually rendered in English as “Lift up your hearts”; Liszt’s subtitle, “Erhebet eure Herzen,” is the German equivalent.
