Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) was a member of the faculty of the Yale School of Music from 1940 until 1953, when he returned to Europe. Upon his death he left his papers to what is now the Hindemith Institute in Frankfurt, Germany. His friend Luther Noss, who served as Dean of the Yale School of Music and professor of organ, assembled an important Hindemith Collection at Yale. It consists chiefly of items donated by Hindemith's friends and associates, and contains several important manuscripts, such as When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd and the Clarinet Concerto. It also includes some more unusual items, such as Hindemith's favorite liqueur glass at the home of his friend and editor Karl Bauer.
